Charity Date Auction – Projectsmile.org

10/3/2009 | Lindsay Brian

I went to a charity date auction at the Gypsy Bar in Boston. This event was sponsored by Projectsmile.org. Projectsmile.org is a non-profit organization that donates small toys, stuffed animals and coloring books/crayons to local police and fire departments for their staff to give to children that are involved in traumatic incidents. The organization was founded in 2003 by Catherine Pisacane.

Never before had I been to anything like this so I was quite curious to see what it was all about. Upon arriving people were extremely friendly and greeting everyone as if they had already known them. When walking in the door you received a booklet that had all the sponsors of the event, what it was all about and all the dates being auctioned off, which included a picture and a brief bio about them.

The event began at 6:30pm, but the guests were given 45 minutes to mingle with everyone including the dates. The bidding began at 7:15pm and all bids started at $50. As the auction went on the bids were getting higher and higher, but weren’t getting high enough. In order to bring the bids higher, ladies were dancing onstage and the gentlemen were taking off their shirts. The host kept reiterating to the crowd, “this is a good cause we can go higher than $75!” Then she added that a pair of Celtics tickets would be awarded to the bidder with the highest amount. At one point two men were going back and forth bidding until one of them finally outbid the other. Upon winning he then announced, “I have a room at the Ritz and everyone’s invited, including the guy I just outbid!” That was the highest bid of the night and it reached over $350. Every guy that bid received a tie from the lady they won a date with, and every lady that won a date with a guy received a pair of shoes from Soft.

This was a fantastic event to raise money because not only is it going to help the children, but it is helping people gain friendships and relationships all while having a good time.
